Model Engineer's Compound Castings
Cylinder dimensions: 1-3/4” + 3” x 2”
Assembled Length, 10” x Width, 10” x Height 12” Weight 30 lbs.
These castings are from before the steam age ended! Build a precise functioning model of a full size 500-1000 HP marine steam engine.
Image 1 shows the engine with major parts erected: cylinder block, condenser, air pump cast integrally with its back columns, like the full size 500-1000 hp engine it precisely models.
According to THE MODEL ENGINEER & ELECTRICIAN, "It is modeled after the compound engine type usually installed in coasting steamers of the 13 + 26 x 20 size. At 100 psi, the model's maximum pressure, it is also large enough to actually do 'work." These castings are accompanied by reprints of the serialized, step-by-step, articles that will guide you from the steam age.
The engine is a scale miniature; its cylinder bock, bedplate, and condenser are cored with the same functional passageways as a full-size engine. Unlike similar-sized models, such as the "Coventry Compound" or "Stuart No. 3" compounds, this model has few simplifications, so it appears real at any stage of its building.
Its foundry patterns and core boxes are made of mahogany, leather, brass, and lacquer, made by a Southern Pacific Railroad pattern maker at the railroad’s foundry in Portland, Oregon, the northern end of the SP line. Remarkably, he made India ink-on-vellum drawings, and copies of these are supplied along with photocopies of original articles from Model Engineer.
The patterns--and especially the coreboxes--are so well executed that the castings show the high art of sand casting at their best, and in hands of a skilled modelmaker these castings have the potential to be no less than exquisite. (I had an incomplete model on my desk when I worked at Precision Castparts Corp. —aerospace engineers would argue they had to be investment cast!
We cannot speak more highly about this engine to the modelbuilder who wishes to build an exact authentic replica of a Victorian era small ship engine. According to Bill Durham who has seen the engine in our shop, "It is for the builder to make a "rare antique" in his very own shop....it would be comparable to museumpiece engines that are so highly valued." Indeed, it is more realistic than the "Firedrake" engine model that was auctioned by Christies in 1997.
Kit includes twelve castings, six dimensioned drawings, and photocopies of serialized articles in which its designer provides an illustrated narrative of how to build the engine in MODEL ENGINEER, March 8 thru April 12 1923.
